Forest Therapy as Spiritual Practice
— Half Day Retreat —
April 28, 2023 – 12:00pm to 3:00pm
Forest Therapy Guide: Anna Marie Nachman
“Out here in the woods I can think of nothing except God and it is not so much that I think of Him either. I am as aware of Him as of the sun and the clouds and the blue sky and the thin cedar trees.” ~Thomas Merton
Forest Therapy is an innovative health solution that draws on nature’s ability to calm us down. It is inspired by Shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of “taking in the forest,” or, “Forest Bathing.” It is a research based practice that supports health and wellness through guided, slow, sensory walks in forests and other natural environments to promote the well-being of both people and the land. Forest Therapy can be a very spiritual experience. In this retreat you will learn about Forest Therapy as well as have the opportunity to experience a forest bathing walk during which, you may discover just how spiritual an experience it can be. Anna Marie Nachman, a certified Forest Therapy guide, will offer a two part experience with a presentation about the practice of Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, as well as examples of how one can be attuned to the spiritual connection with God through his creation during a forest bathing walk. After a lunch break, participants will then take a guided walk which lasts approximately two and a half hours. There will be time for journaling and reflection after the walk.
This walk will take place regardless of the weather, except for an active thunderstorm. Further information on how to prepare will be shared with registrants prior to the retreat.
Anna Marie Nachman is a Certified Forest Therapy Guide and certified by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs. She is also certified in wilderness first aid.
